On Gimp and Photoshop

I couldn't make the diagrams I wanted of Ammonia with Gimp and don't have Photoshop anymore
Well, the free and open replacement for Photoshop is Krita, not Gimp. Gimp has always been an ugly, irrational abomination. It never worked and it drove its users to depression. I tried using it once.
On the contrary, Krita is very much like Photoshop, it's intuitive and well-designed. I highly recommend it. Sure, it's missing some of Photoshops's fetures (I miss the intelligent texture-matching eraser the most), but overall it's an excellent tool. I highly recommend it.

And since we are talking about graphics, may I also recommend Inkscape. It's the free and open vector drawing program, akin to Adobe Illustrator. Again, some features are missing, but overall when I need svg vectors, it usually does the job very well. You may find it more useful than the bitmap Krita - although admittedly it's harder to learn vector graphics than bitmaps.

This concludes my software recommendations for image drawing software.
